Abhishek S. Kannan, MD

Dr. Abhishek Kannan is a fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon with the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute. He treats athletes and non-athletes who suffer from disorders affecting their muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. He often treats:

  • Cartilage injuries
  • Ligament and meniscus tears
  • Hip impingement and labral tears
  • Shoulder arthritis
  • Rotator cuff tears

Dr. Kannan uses a patient-specific approach to find the optimal treatment plan, which could range from activity modifications and physical therapy to surgical repair or reconstruction. His decision-making process integrates clinical evaluation, evidence-based treatment strategies, and sports-specific rehabilitation to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Dr. Kannan’s Training

Dr. Kannan earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center in Chicago. Following residency, Dr. Kannan completed fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Kannan is an active member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

He has contributed to multiple medical journals, including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has published peer-reviewed articles on various topics related to bone healing, arthroscopic hip preservation, and minimally invasive surgical techniques related to the hip and shoulder.

Outside of work, Dr. Kannan enjoys spending time with family, playing tennis, and personal fitness.
